In May of this year, we received a letter from a 10-year-old boy from Marlton, New Jersey. Jake was given a task: select a topic he was familiar with and craft a feature article about it, in hopes of getting it published. His entire class wrote informational texts and sent them across the country. Jake chose to send his feature to us.

Upon receiving the article, we not only decided to give him the opportunity to share his work but also to catapult a new program at Orlando magazine with a mission of sharing the passion of young writers everywhere. Enter the "Kid Kontributor of the Month" program, where we spotlight one young writer (12 and under) and their feature article on a specific topic each month.

The story Jake submitted was about the rides at Universal Orlando Resort (you can read it here). Feeling inspired by his passion - and with some help from our friends at the Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek - we flew Jake and his family from New Jersey to Orlando with a new task: write a feature article on the opening of Toy Story Land, his experience at the Wyndham Grand, and interview Executive Chef Jonathan McCann. With pen and paper ready, Jake accepted the challenge.

Toy Story Land

By: Jake R.

Hey have you ever seen the movie Toy Story? Well, now in Disney World Hollywood Studios there is a whole LAND about it. It opened on June 29th, 2018 and it is spectacular. When you first come you see all of Andy’s favorite toys—Woody, Jessie, Buzz, Slinky, Rex, Wheezy and the Aliens! Everywhere you look there are toys and you feel like you are shrunk down to their size. Hope you go and visit Toy Story Land!!!

A Very Slinky Dog

Do you like Slinky from Toy Story? Well, they made a ride about him. Slinky Dog Dash is a thrilling roller coaster. You can now ride Slinky around Toy Story Land. You ride around Jessie and Rex and then thru the aliens! The grand finale is the BEST. Wheezy sings "You've Got a Friend in Me." This is awesome because you are kind of like on Slinky’s back going up and down on the ride! I hope you love Slinky Dog Dash as much as I do or even more!

P.S. In the waiting line the army men in Toy Story sometimes come and play music. I hope you find them. They are cool.

Woody's Has Great Food

Woody’s Lunch Box is a cool place to eat in Toy Story Land. It has a lot of great food for kids and adults, same with drinks. I got a killer grilled cheese and yum, it was awesome!!! The seat, tables and even trash cans were toy themed too. There were toy soldiers all around. It's really, really, REALLY good. I hope you like it as much as I do. Go hungry.

Alien Spin Spin Spin

The Alien Swirling Saucers is where you spin around in the aliens' back seat trying to juke the CLAW. it takes you in four circles tracks so you don’t just spin and get dizzy. The alien leads your getaway spaceship. The buttons in the spaceship look cool, but they don’t do anything or make you spin. Hope you don’t get dizzy!

Toy Story SHOOT

In Toy Story Mania, you shoot the targets with your fake gun to get points! If you get more points than the other person next to you, you win. The targets are on the screen and they move, your cart moves and spins too! They also give you different points for different targets. Hope you win against your partner or just have fun!

P.S. Toy Story Mania is one of the most popular rides. It opened on May 31st, 2008! (Gosh sooooooo OLD!)

To Infinity and Beyond!!!

Even if you haven’t seen the movies you will love this place! The Land was beyond fantastic and the rides are great for the whole family! Buzz Lightyear bubble blower lights up and lasts for a long time! Can’t wait to go back and do it all again!

TIPS

  1. It can get very hot. Keep cool by eating Mickey ice creams and drinks lotso water.
  2. If you have no fast pass, you might wait for a LONG time! Remember it’s worth the wait and you can play I-Spy in the line or search for hidden Mickeys.
  3. Take a bunch of pictures to remember your fun time!
